For over two decades, I was deeply immersed in the Pekiti Tirsia (PT) system of Kali, where I not only trained but also became one of Europe’s leading practitioners and instructors. So why, after such a long and dedicated journey, did I transition to my own system, Armadong Kali? It was not a decision taken lightly, but rather the result of several important factors, both personal and philosophical.
One of the key reasons behind my decision was the importance of ensuring a smooth generational shift within the European Pekiti Tirsia organization. After many years of guiding and leading, it became clear to me that the next generation of instructors needed space to develop and thrive. They should be free to shape their own path without feeling overshadowed by someone who had been a central figure for so long.
While I am always ready to offer support where needed, I believe that my presence should never be an obstacle to their growth. Leadership is not just about holding on to power—it’s about knowing when to step back, to allow others to flourish. I wanted to create the room for the future leaders of PT to make their mark without feeling constrained by my influence.
Another driving force was my profound respect for Grand Tuhon Gaje, the heart and soul of Pekiti Tirsia. He is Pekiti Tirsia. His contributions, his teachings, and his legacy are unparalleled, and it would be neither fair nor respectful to try to claim his achievements for my own.
Many of his students know his famous statement:

And that is exactly what he is — the living embodiment of Pekiti Tirsia. The system exists through him, not through documents, titles, or organizations. Recognizing this was essential for me. By moving to Armadong Kali, I ensure that I continue to honor his legacy without diluting his work or attempting to assert my place in a system that he so deeply embodies.
I firmly believe that preserving the memory and work of a great teacher like Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje doesn’t mean clinging to their methods or trying to freeze a living art in time. Instead, it means allowing their flame to inspire new growth rather than holding on to the ashes of the past. This was never about leaving PT behind, but about ensuring that the essence of its teachings remained pure, respected, and connected to its source.
One of the most significant realizations I came to over the years is that martial arts, like any living system, must evolve and continuously prove themselves. It’s comforting to stand within a time-honored tradition, and there’s no doubt that a well-established brand like PT inspires confidence in students. However, I’ve always believed that a martial art should not rely solely on tradition to validate itself.
What truly matters is the logic and effectiveness of the system in the present day. A combat art that can stand on its own merit, through the skill and experience of its practitioners and instructors, requires no external validation from historical lineages. In my view, this is the real spirit of Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)—not the preservation of old techniques for their own sake, but keeping the core principles alive and adapting them to the present.
As a teacher, my aim is to offer a system that speaks to the needs of today’s practitioners, drawing from my personal experiences and abilities rather than leaning on the authority of tradition alone. Armadong Kali is born from this belief: that martial arts must remain dynamic and responsive, guided by personal mastery rather than adherence to old forms.
For some time, I was content in my role within PT, even as I began to feel uncomfortable with the direction things were heading on the international stage. Despite the fact that Grand Tuhon Gaje was still with us, disputes among some of his students had already begun over who held the “true” version of the system and who would be the rightful successor. This internal conflict was deeply troubling to me and made it harder to continue in the same way.
Eventually, the discomfort grew too great to ignore, and I realized that the time had come for me to move forward. It wasn’t a sudden decision, but a gradual shift, and when the moment arrived, it felt both right and liberating. By creating Armadong Kali, I’ve embraced the opportunity to return to the core of what I believe martial arts should be—a living, breathing system that thrives through innovation, not stagnation.
My journey from Pekiti Tirsia to Armadong Kali has been one of deep reflection and growth. I hold nothing but respect for the system that shaped me for so long, and for Grand Tuhon Gaje, who remains a towering figure in FMA. But just as martial arts must evolve, so too must its practitioners. Armadong Kali represents my personal evolution as a martial artist, and I look forward to continuing this journey with the same dedication, passion, and respect that has always driven me.

Über mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte war ich tief im Pekiti Tirsia (PT) System verwurzelt – als Schüler, Lehrer und einer der führenden Praktizierenden in Europa. Warum also habe ich mich nach einer so langen und intensiven Reise entschieden, meinen eigenen Weg mit Armadong Kali zu gehen? Die Entscheidung fiel nicht leicht, sondern entwickelte sich aus mehreren wichtigen persönlichen und fachlichen Gründen.
Ein wichtiger Beweggrund war die Notwendigkeit, innerhalb der europäischen PT-Organisation einen echten Generationswechsel zu ermöglichen. Nach vielen Jahren in leitender Rolle wurde mir klar, dass die nächste Generation an Lehrern eigenen Gestaltungsspielraum braucht – frei von dem Gefühl, im Schatten einer prägenden Figur zu stehen.
Ich unterstütze weiterhin gerne, wo es sinnvoll ist. Aber echte Führung bedeutet auch, rechtzeitig einen Schritt zurückzutreten und anderen den Raum zu geben, den sie brauchen, um zu wachsen und ihren eigenen Weg zu finden. Die künftigen Führungspersönlichkeiten von Pekiti Tirsia Europe sollten ihren Weg frei und ohne Einschränkungen wählen können.
Ein weiterer zentraler Grund war mein tief empfundener Respekt vor Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje – der Person, die Pekiti Tirsia geschaffen hat und es in einer Weise verkörpert, die niemand sonst erreichen kann. Er ist Pekiti Tirsia. Seine Lehre, sein Wirken und sein Vermächtnis sind einzigartig. Es wäre weder richtig noch respektvoll, seine Leistungen für sich zu beanspruchen oder sich an die Stelle dessen zu setzen, was er verkörpert.
Viele seiner Schüler kennen seinen berühmten Satz:

Und genau das ist er: das lebendige Herz von Pekiti Tirsia. Das System existiert durch ihn, nicht durch Dokumente, Titel oder Organisationen. Diese Erkenntnis war für mich entscheidend. Mit Armadong Kali halte ich sein Werk in Ehren, ohne es zu verwässern oder meinen Platz in einem System zu beanspruchen, das zutiefst mit seiner Person verbunden ist.
Die Arbeit eines großen Lehrers zu bewahren heißt nicht, alles unverändert festzuhalten. Es bedeutet, dass sein Feuer weiter inspirieren darf – statt die Asche zu konservieren. Der Schritt zu Armadong Kali war nie ein „Abwenden von PT“, sondern ein Weg, das Erbe rein zu halten und gleichzeitig Neues entstehen zu lassen.
Im Lauf der Zeit habe ich klar erkannt: Kampfkunst ist ein lebendiges System – und muss sich weiterentwickeln, um relevant zu bleiben. Tradition gibt Halt, und große Namen schaffen Vertrauen. Doch ein System sollte nicht nur durch Tradition bestehen.
Was wirklich zählt, ist seine Logik, seine Funktionsweise und seine Effektivität im Hier und Jetzt.
Eine Kampfkunst, die auf eigenen Fähigkeiten, eigener Erfahrung und eigener Kompetenz steht, braucht keine historischen Autoritäten als Stütze. In diesem Prinzip sehe ich den wahren Geist der Filipino Martial Arts: Nicht das Festhalten an alten Formen, sondern das lebendige Fortführen ihrer Kernprinzipien.
Als Lehrer möchte ich ein System vermitteln, das die heutige Generation wirklich erreicht – basierend auf meinen Erfahrungen und Fähigkeiten, nicht auf Titeln oder Linienzuordnungen. Armadong Kali wurde aus diesem Verständnis heraus geboren: dynamisch, anpassungsfähig, klar.
Zusätzlich zu den zuvor genannten Gründen spielte auch die Entwicklung innerhalb des internationalen Pekiti-Tirsia-Umfelds eine Rolle. Bereits während meiner aktiven Zeit im System entstanden unter einigen Schülern von Grand Tuhon Gaje Diskussionen darüber, wie das System auszulegen sei und wohin sich Pekiti Tirsia entwickeln solle. Dabei stand jedoch nicht immer das Wohl der Kunst oder der Familie Gaje im Vordergrund, sondern häufig Fragen von Rang, Einfluss und persönlichem Ansehen.
Mit der Zeit verschob sich der Fokus dieser Diskussionen von der Sachebene hin zu Dynamiken, die wenig mit konstruktiver Zusammenarbeit zu tun hatten und nicht dem entsprachen, was ich in einer Kampfkunst suche.
Das mitzuerleben fiel mir zunehmend schwer. Über die Jahre reifte deshalb der Entschluss, mich von diesen Entwicklungen zu lösen. Als der richtige Moment gekommen war, fühlte sich die Entscheidung klar und befreiend an.
Armadong Kali ermöglicht es mir, zu dem zurückzukehren, was Kampfkunst für mich im Kern bedeutet: ein lebendiges, sich weiterentwickelndes System – frei von politischen Auseinandersetzungen und getragen von Verantwortung, Klarheit und persönlicher Weiterentwicklung.
Mein Weg von Pekiti Tirsia zu Armadong Kali war ein Prozess tiefer Reflexion und persönlicher Weiterentwicklung. Ich empfinde nichts als Respekt für das System, das mich so lange geprägt hat, und für Grand Tuhon Gaje, der eine herausragende Persönlichkeit der FMA bleibt.
Doch wie sich eine Kampfkunst weiterentwickeln muss, so entwickeln sich auch ihre Praktizierenden. Armadong Kali ist Ausdruck meines eigenen Weges – das Ergebnis von Erfahrung, Klarheit und Verantwortung. Ich freue mich darauf, diesen Weg weiterhin mit derselben Hingabe und Leidenschaft zu gehen, die mich immer begleitet hat.
